Experience is the Teacher for All Things

To enrich my experience and strengthen my job applications, I chose to undertake both internship and exchange programmes. I took a year off from studies for my internship, as I regarded it as a good opportunity to get accustomed to working in a Big-4 accounting firm. This deeply influenced my selection criteria when job hunting.

When I worked as an intern in Deloitte’s Enterprise Risk Service Department, I drew over 90 business process diagrams using Nimbus for major clients in the business reengineering process. The clients were satisfied with the diagrams, and this gives me great encouragement and confidence.

During my exchange study in Singapore, I encountered different cultures, and learned how to adapt to these cultural differences. I was assigned to a management accounting group project and worked with teammates from four different countries. We worked hard to meet the deadline. We all received positive comments from our tutor.

Time passes so quickly and I am already a CityU graduate. I would like to thank Mr Sunny Wong, my course advisor, who gave me helpful advice for my study plan. He also encouraged me to take the internship for a year. Without him, I would probably have missed out on this opportunity. Although I know very little about technology, my colleagues in Deloitte ERS gave me the opportunity to explore and develop my strengths. Hence, I am really grateful to all of the people who helped me throughout my internship and exchange.

I think it is really beneficial to students to take a year off to work in a Big-4 accounting firm as an intern, but not everyone can have this opportunity.
